Gilberto delivers an incredibly chromatic melody, painting with all the colors of the musical rainbow. Notice how he effortlessly sings this intricate tune, making it seem simple and delicate.
Keep in mind, this was 1977, and Autotune hadn't been invented yet, so he hit every note organically.
The orchestra then echoes the melody as if something is on the verge of falling, but it never does. This chromatic technique is woven throughout the composition and orchestration.
Sophistication can take many forms, but this tune combines the complexity of a baroque piece with a seemingly simple and relaxed delivery.
